However, recent work demonstrates that increasing the fraction of autonomous vehicles in a mixed-autonomy network can actually exacerbate congestion when all vehicles are routed selfishly [2]. As another example, although CAVs on a multi-lane highway can execute lane-switching behaviors to stabilize traffic, recent work indicates that the frequency of the lane switches must be carefully designed to avoid tipping the system back into instability. These examples illustrate that carelessly devised strategies for operating CAVs in mixed autonomy can negate the CAVs’ potential to positively impact modern transportation systems. The focus of this workshop is therefore: \u003Cstrong>“How should mixed-autonomy traffic systems be controlled to maximize the benefits of deploying connected and autonomous vehicles?”\u003C/strong>\u003C/p>\u003Cp>Our workshop aims to study the above question by considering various control-theoretic and learning-centric perspectives on the opportunities and challenges posed by large-scale mixed-autonomy traffic systems. Specifically, we aim to bring together speakers representing expertise in systems theory, game theory, and machine learning. We will hear from Dr. Negar Mehr (UC Berkeley), who will present her work on socially-aware control of mixed-autonomy traffic networks, from Dr. Ruolin Li (USC), who will present her work on tolling autonomous and high-occupancy vehicles in interactive mixed autonomy settings, from Dr. Ramtin Pedarsani (UCSB), who will present his work on mixed-autonomy in ride-sharing networks, and from Dr. Roy Dong (UIUC), who will present his work on analyzing the stability of multi-lane mixed-autonomy traffic using hybrid systems theory. Together with the contributed papers, these diverse viewpoints will illustrate the broad impacts of strategic thinking in multi-agent environments, and how progress in these settings is transforming the state-of-the-art across the research community in controlling mixed autonomy traffic and beyond.\u003C/p>\u003Cp>We have divided our workshop into three session types, each of which allows for a different mixture of voices to be heard:\u003C/p>\u003Cul>\u003Cli>Invited Talks - These sessions will allow attendees to learn about recent results and current trends from experts in the research areas of routing and pricing ride-sharing services in mixed autonomy networks.\u003C/li>\u003Cli>Interactive Poster Session - This session will showcase the work of young researchers and will provide opportunities for informal discussions between participants and speakers.\u003C/li>\u003Cli>Panel Discussion - This moderated discussion will include our invited speakers. Examples are pervasive. In the corporate world: what products should a company develop in an uncertain market environment? In public policy: How can we reduce inequality and poverty? For the planet: How can progress be made towards mitigating and adapting to climate change?\u003C/p>\u003Cp>Managerial decision making is challenging for multiple reasons. The problems are dynamic, with feedback elements, time delays, and deadlines. Resources—people, expertise, funding—are always constrained. Uncertainty is pervasive and manifests in various way —noise, disturbances, partial knowledge. And people, both as managers and as the managed, are hard to model. As the terminology in this paragraph suggests, there are strong intuitive connections with control.\u003C/p>\u003Cp>The workshop will develop these intuitive connections, both in quantitative and qualitative directions. An underlying premise is that control science can be considered the only rigorous approach to effective decision making in complex dynamical systems (including managerial ones).&nbsp;\u003C/p>\u003Cp>In addition to prepared presentations and open discussion, the workshop program will include breakout sessions, in which subgroups will discuss and brainstorm before reporting out to the full audience. Recent advancements in LLMs have significantly expanded the scope of what AI can accomplish in complex problem-solving, driving applications across domains such as coding, reasoning, mathematics, and science.\u003C/p>","\u003Cp>As LLM capabilities continue to advance, their potential to transform control theory and practice is becoming increasingly evident and impactful. This workshop aims to provide a comprehensive review of various recently-developed results on the capabilities of LLMs in control engineering and decision making. By bringing together experts from control systems, natural language processing, and robotics, the workshop will foster interdisciplinary discussions that highlight how LLMs are being utilized to automate and enhance control design processes, optimize decision-making strategies, and address complex challenges across multiple domains.&nbsp;\u003C/p>\u003Cp>Specific topics covered in this workshop include: i) capabilities of LLMs in answering textbook-level control system questions, ii) advanced techniques for LLM reasoning (e.g. Chain-of-Thoughts, Program-of-Thoughts, Reasoning-via-Planning, self-refinement, tool use, and LLM agents), iii) ControlAgent: combining LLM reasoning with control toolboxes for automating practical control design, vi) combining LLM reasoning with verification tools for automating verification of control systems, v) large agent models, vi) novel applications of LLMs and vision language models (VLMs) for robotic manipulations, and vii) limitations of LLMs for control engineering. Participants will gain insights into LLM reasoning and applications for control engineering, as well as emerging opportunities for integrating LLMs into future control systems.
